Sporting grounds

In the 1970’s, 80% of school children were active on the way to school. Today, only 20% experience the joy of getting fresh air on the school journey. To provide a regular opportunity to go riding, away from traffic and with an element of supervision, the school has prepared a circuit track around the fence and boundary areas of the oval. Boyne Smelters provided $5000 towards the creation of the space.  Students need to have parent consent to acknowledge their safety and behavioural expectations. Eg. Helmet and working brakes. We will mimic real life and issue a “B Plate’ to indicate students who are ‘licensed’ to ride.
There is an extra degree of risk associated with bike riding, (you can fall off a bike) compared to walking but we believe it is within acceptable normal childhood experiences and no more than playing a team based sport on the oval. As a new program the guidelines and implementation will be monitored. Students in Year 4-6 with signed consent will soon be able to use the designated oval and playground areas with their bike at play times.
